There are two ways of removing a Vanguard 16 HP from a 4016. Both methods require disconnecting the engine from the hydraulic pump. Both methods are physically difficult and a challenge because the work space is severely cramped.
1 Method is to remove the two set screws on the hydraulic pump. No pic necessary they are visible without digging to far. You will find them.
2 Method is to remove the hidden 1/2" bolts that secure the pump to the vanguard fly wheel.
I am including a pic that I hope will give you a view of the 1/2" bolts that can be removed.
- 1st you would need to free up the screen and pull it away from the flywheel.
- 2nd you need to remove the bolts.
** The bolts are torqued ! I was able to get a shallow 1/2" by 3/8" drive socket on the bolts and loosened them with a long breaker bar. BE CAREFUL. I recommend a 6 pt socket or perhaps an offset box wrench. I would not use a 12 pt. You might round off the bolt heads - they are tight!
I hope this pic will help. It is a bear of a job. This takes time, patience and the ability to know when to walk away and take a break. But you can do this and you will get it done. Best of luck.
