Hey buddy! Just wondering since you are a welder by trade, if you have ever had the pleasure [or displeasure] of welding with a Powermate 230/140 AC/DC unit [made by Century]? Used one at a neighbors a couple of days ago to weld a well casing 6' down in a small hole/out of position RFPIA on DC while standing/kneeling in water with snow coming down. Went REALLY well in spite of everything working against me.

Anyways, The same model has come up for sale in Cornwall and the dude is asking 250$ OBO. While I tend to wireweld everything I can, there is no replacement for a good stick for certain jobs. Lincoln or Miller units even used are very expensive for part time use for me. Thoughts?

Merrill I have never used a Powermate made by Century. I would say since you have used one you yourself can tell the performance. How hard was it to strike an arc and get the rod to melt? Did the machine ever shut down while welding? If you exceeded the duty cycle that could happen.

If I was considering to buy one I would want to try it out. Try burning a 6010 or 7018 electrode in a vertical up position position and see if it can keep the arc going.
